Float FAQ

Experiencing the ultimate stillness.

At skin temperature and 1200 pounds of Epsom salt, the water you’re reclined in will have you losing track of where it ends and your body begins.

For an hour your mind is free of distraction and your body is free of gravity. The nothingness of that experience is everything and more.

In total darkness and with your ears just below the surface, nothing can reach you. The outside world is non-existent so your focus can turn inwards where amazing things will happen.

Giving your body a break from gravity’s hold can be transforming. The lack of stimulation allows the occupied parts of your mind and body to completely focus elsewhere.

The Epsom salt cradling your body will leave your skin silky and your hair smooth when you emerge. An Epsom salt solution is both moisturizing and hydrating. Unlike what you experience after a long bath, your skin will not be pruney!

There’s no wrong way to float. Keep the lights off. Or turn them on. Listen to music or float in silence. Leave immediately or hang out afterward in the Lounge. Hold your stillness any way you like.

What do I bring for my float?

Nothing. Yourself and an open mind. Everything else is provided. Feel free to bring your own personal care items if you like.

What if I’m claustrophobic?

We get that question a lot. We chose our float tanks specifically for their size. They are 7 1/2 feet long and 5 feet wide. They’re like your own little mini pool so we really don’t think claustrophobia will be an issue for many (if any) clients.

Other Frequently Asked Questions...

  • Is floating sanitary?

Extremely. After each float, the water passes 4 times through a 1-micron filter (one-millionth of a meter and for comparison, a blood cell is 5-microns) and a photocatalytic UV chamber that instantaneously kills viruses, pathogens, and bacteria. It’s the same technology used to turn sewage water into drinking water. We also clean all surfaces of our float rooms with an EPA and OSHA certified sanitizer that kills the human Coronavirus. For more specific information, we wrote a blog post about it as well.

  • What can I expect?

Every experience is different and unique to each user and we can’t really tell you what yours will be. But probably something you’ve never felt before.

  • What's this about R.E.S.T.?

Floating is also known as R.E.S.T. or Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy. The perfect acronym for what all of our bodies need from time to time.

  • What do I wear?

Nothing. You are in a locked and private room the entire time. Bathing suits cause distraction and we want you to lose where you body ends and the water begins.

  • What kind of tanks do you have?

We have two UK-manufactured I-sopods, which resemble giant eggs with clamshell lids. The cocoon-like feeling allows you to contemplate the infinite as you begin your journey.

  • What should I do to prepare?

Nothing specific. Ideally, avoid caffeine 90 minutes before you float. It is also best not to shave or wax right beforehand because the Epsom salt might sting a bit.

  • What if I don't know how to float?

No need to worry. The Epsom salt solution will do all the work for you. You couldn’t not float if you tried!

  • What if I recently dyed my hair?

For the benefit of your hair color and for the tanks, we ask you wait at least 7 days and until the water runs clear when you wash your hair before coming to float.

  • Is floating 'legit'?

Absolutely! Floating has existed for over 40 years with numerous published studies and media coverage that have discussed the physical, spiritual and intellectual benefits you are about to experience.

Check out our blog for more posts about the benefits of massage and floating.

  • Is it weird?

It is different. Your body is in an environment it probably hasn’t been in since birth. So yes, it will take some getting used to. But so worth it.

  • What if I wear contacts?

You most likely will prefer to float without them, so be sure to bring your case and solution.

  • Can 2 (or more) people float in the same tank at once?

No. Our tanks are designed for one, and we believe that floating is deeply personal and should be experienced alone. But we do have 2 Float Pods, so you can book appointments at the same time as your nearest and dearest.

  • Can I float if I am pregnant?

Yes. With the okay from your physician or midwife, you may float into your second or third trimester. Many pregnant women find floating helps relieve the joint pain and inflammation associated with carrying additional baby weight.

Floating has been shown to reduce cortisol levels and boost endorphins which may help counteract the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy which can result in insomnia, anxiety, and depression.

Anecdotally, many mothers-to-be in the tank experience an amazing bonding experience with their unborn baby known as the “mirror effect” where the baby rests peacefully in the womb while the mother rests in a similar womb-like environment. Some report hearing their baby’s heartbeat for the first time.

  • Can I float if I'm menstruating?

Yes. Follow the same protocol as you would for a swimming pool.  Your flow should be manageable with a tampon, but if it is heavier, we will happily help you reschedule.
